All about Safety Cables

Safety cable or wiring is typically used as an extra precaution to keep fasteners located on types of machinery or equipment from coming loose. Threats that could cause fasteners to come loose include vibrations and other forces. Often safety cables are needed as a common requirement for equipment to pass inspections.

 

These cables come in a variety of sizes or gauges and a wide range of materials. The size of the wiring and type of material used depends on the application. For example, stainless steel is typically used to make safety cables for aircraft or racing equipment. Other types of safety cables are made from materials such as Inconel and Monel. These materials are made from a mixture of metals that include copper, nickel, and iron. They are used in applications that require the cables to withstand high temperatures and are most commonly used in industries like, Aerospace.

 

To properly secure safety cables one must twist the cable around fasteners a number of times. The number of times the wire gets twisted depends on the wire gauge. It is also important to remember when installing safety wire that the wire or cable is threaded so that the tension from the wire is going the opposite way of the fasteners direction of removal. This keeps the fastener tight and ensures its inability to come loose.

 

Although there are other ways to ensure the safety of equipment, safety wiring has a visual advantage. When safety cables are installed they are easy to see and inspect, so before using dangerous equipment you may be able to ensure the fasteners are properly secured.
