what is tungsten & tungsten carbide?
Tungsten element, the chemical symbol is "W" and the automic number is 74. It was found by José and Fausto Elhuyar 1783. The name "tungsten"(also called wolfram) used in English, French, and many other languages as this element's name is from the Nordic tung sten, which means "heavy stone". Pure tungsten is steel-gray(but a little dark) under normal conditions. The melting point is 3410±20℃.Tungsten element resists accack by oxygen, acids, and alkalis. Tungsten can be combines with oxygen and form the yellow tungstic oxide.
Tungsten carbide almost the hardest thing in the world except diamond produced by heating powder tungsten with Carbon(2770 °C for WC and 2780 °C for W2C).
Tungsten carbide-based Alloy: Tungsten carbide have high hardness , wear resistance and refractory nature . These alloys contain 85% to 95 % of the tungsten carbide, and 5 % to 14 % of the cobalt as a binder metal, it make the alloy has the necessary strength . Mainly used for processing steels of certain alloy , but also contain titanium, tantalum and niobium carbides. All of these alloys are by powder metallurgy manufactured . When heated to 1000 ~ 1100 ℃ , they still have high hardness and wear resistance. Tungsten Carbide tools cutting far more than the best tool steel tool cutting . Carbide is mainly used for cutting tools, mining tools, and drawing modules.
Tungsten is found naturally on Earth only combined in chemical compoundsI(most in the (FeMn)WO4, CaWO4). China, Canada and USA purduced the most of the tungsten in the world.
Tungsten element is used in moulding, metal cutting, weapon mading industrial, and several years before we used tungsten lamp filament.It is very important in the morden indstrial:
80% of tungsten is used in the smelting of the steel.
10% used in the supersteel making
7% used in the weapon, Rockets, metal cutting.
3% in the tungsten jewelry making industrial, like tungsten rings, tugnsten bracelets & watches. But notice tungsten jewelry not making by pure tungsten but tungsten carbide with nickel binder. The cobalt binder will make your skin green and pain.
